Ali Baba Bujang Lapok (1960) - a Malaysian dystopian made film???

I considered anyone who aspires to be a movie critique in Malaysia to know this movie. Made in 1960 by our beloved Tan Sri P. Ramlee, this movie is a loose adaptation of one of the tales of One Thousand and One Night tales, a famous tale from the Muslim civilization. The story is a combination of farce and burlesque comedy but I just could not shake that the social background in this story can make it to be viewed as a dystopian movie, a genre that always brings provocation and dark elements upon its viewer. I accept the chances that my thought will be fought and challenged as I have written this in deductive style and my point will focused to prove that I am right and 'blinded' me to look at it the other way round. Nevertheless, I think my thought is worth looked and dissected by everyone.

When it comes to dystopian literature, I always looked at two works, 1984 by George Orwell and A Clockwork Orange by Anthony Burgess. Both stories features a concept, a failed society purged by a failed political body. While dystopia always concerned about society in the future, completely different from the time frame of Ali Baba Bujang Lapok, there are elements in the story that portrayed the society as a dystopian society. I have three reasons to react to this, the first one is the social structure and cultural settings of the movie, second is the characteristics and finally the band of thieves itself.

One, when I properly looked upon the cultural background of the story, it is very much likely to believe that the thugs or the thieves are the ruler of the society. The absence of any police force in this movie is strikingly apparent. But the police force did earn a spot in this movie in the villagers descriptions. One memorable quote about the police is the conversation between the slave Marjina and the shop owner about the 'belacan'.

(loosely translated)

Marjina: Saya mahu beli belacan
Shop owner: Shh!!! Jangan cakap kuat-kuat! Nanti polis tangkap sama saya.
Marjina: Jual belacan pun kena tangkap??
Shop owner: Ya, jual ganja ada lesen. Jual candu kena lesen. Tapi jual belacan tak ada lesen. Saya smuggle dari Malaya

This conversation clearly shows the police and administration's stands in the society, what is allowed and not allowed. If we looked at it carefully, the police's stand in this movie may indicate that they only cared on their clan by allowing drugs to be sold and making their job easier but taxing the basic necessity of the people to earn their cheap living through the taxes. This is disturbingly abnormal and sinister in its sense. And the police force is not the only guilty element in this society, the whole society can take credit on its notoriety. It is also portrayed numerously in the story that most people earn their living by doing immoral jobs. We've seen big syndicate of slave trading, an old man earn his living by giving cheap advice and sleazy innuendos and also people boldly declared selling drugs on the street. This portrayal is a clear epitome of a fail society and a totally corrupt one. The only ones that does not seem to be corrupted is the non-class citizen, the slave who happily lead their lives singing song praising God (Alhamdulliah, syukur nikmat). The element of a morally failed society is a important factor of a dystopian society and in this movie, the society is indeed a morally failed society.

Secondly, I was called upon the portrayal of the characters in the movie. As the tittle suggest, the story is focused on one man, Ali Baba who amazingly characterized by Dato' Aziz Sattar. When examining his character, he comes up to me as a failed hero. There's little to be admired about him, he's a lazy bum and drives his loving wife nuts and he punches in luck in this movie through series of trickery and cheat. It seems that he also encompasses the same or worse moral failure like the thieves and the rest of the society. The only good trait that I can found out about him is he is not greedy like his brother. It's disturbingly dark of his character on the choice that he made in this movie. In the movie, he broke his promise to the thieves chief by telling Kassim Baba of the song to open the Cave of Wonder. Kassim Baba, driven by his greed, took everything that he can and alas he was caught and severely punished by the thief chief by having his body part dismembered. What disturbingly about this is what happened aftermath. Ali Baba found his brother's body scattered in the cave and then what he did? He hired a cobbler to sew him back to one piece and takes no account of rage or anger towards the thieves whom were clearly the preparator of the murder. Perhaps the absence of police force mentioned earlier might be a contributing factor to his behavior but it gets darker when he was reunited with the thief chief later and he treated him as an old buddy not as the murderer of his brother. This vividly flaw in his character depicts a stand of the society's mind. Perhaps in this society, they clearly believed in 'you reap in what you sow'. Perhaps Ali Baba sees that Kassim Baba gets what he deserved based on his failure to outwit the chief, an achievement that he makes him survive and outlived his brother. This disturbing flaw makes him a character to be revered and fun to looked at, much to owe to Dato' Aziz Sattar superb performance but nonetheless a dark character as well.

Thirdly, the organization of the thief itself. It is the only structurally functioning society in this story. They have pension, count of holiday, health department and organizational hierarchy. It shows that they are the real ruler of the town and it is strengthen in the movie that even people asked them for help. (The Sharrif Dol scene) The true epitome of their power is showed after the thief got their pay. With the monthly paid, the quickly bought new dresses and have fun at the club. And what were they dressed themselves with?? As a penghulu, lawyer, cowboy, hero and ahh...policeman of course. Those were the dresses of people that we associated to being good and able to bring justice, morality and peace to the society. It clearly portrayed their ego and reign as the real ruler of the society. It is a total mockery of the people and a sign that the town's fate is really in their hands and they are the ones that shaped it. And it was shaped in a failure manner but so successful because it seems that almost none questioned it. Isn't that a mark of a dystopian society??

Having to state all these, I can't help but thinking what is the reason for P.Ramlee to be doing this in this movie. Actually, the movie itself was banned prior to the opening and it was later in years it got its rights to be shown to public. Perhaps P.Ramlee, man that lived through different reign of power in Malaya. He survived the Japanese occupation, the British colony and 1960 was a period of threat from the communist. He had seen how much flaw in political power that influenced the society. Maybe by portraying the thieves as the ruler of the society is a gentle reminder of what could happen if 'thugs' and 'liars' were to rule the country. And the belacan scene is maybe the mockery of the Japanese occupation period that imposes tax of salt to the people. Maybe that's the message that he was trying to convey to us. Or maybe it was done in a very subtle way that he himself did not realize that these are the reflect that some of the audience get. In any case, point well delivered sir...

Personal entry number 1: Memoir of 7 years of education, wonder, laughter and pain...

I was there in 2002, I was 18 years old back then...There's nothing much I know about the world back then even though I thought that I knew everything. I know nothing about what to wear to compliment me, I never knew what is the difference between foundation, powder and concealer... I did now how to live in a dorm of 8 and I never knew that people will always be on your back all the time...Nevertheless, back then, it was simpler...I was here when the journey to sek. 2 was free, when there was a computer lab on the 6th floor and when the CK college was only a college, not a class + college...I was here when the FSG was paintless, the library did not have fancy monument in front of it and definitely when the engine street was ruled by the engineering students who thought of no one but themselves...I was here when the underground cafe sold a slice of delicious hazelnut chocolate cake for RM 3.80 and there used to be a small rojak buah stall who got the best rojak buah ever...I was here when Pusat Kesihatan is located at Seroja and I was here definately knowing little of what is hard work, friendship, love and sacrifice are really mean...

7 years later, I finally knew that slim fit and form-fitting compliment my slim figure, I can wear mascara without mirror and I knew that how to survive in a close-tight group. Now, the journey to sek.2 cost RM 1, CK now is nearly unhabited, FSG was painted in bright pink and the journey to the library was like the roadway to Smithsonian Museum. The engine street was like street in the movie 'I am Legend', there's barely people walk along the road. I have no idea what happen to the chocolate cake and the rojak buah and Pusat Kesihatan finally got its own building near the 2nd gate...

And I also returned to understand more about hard work, friendship, love and sacrifice...

To the AS113 gang...

I know that I may be jerk to some of you, but know this, I'm happy that I've got the chance to work and learn from each and everyone of you. I didn't even knew where are guys now and how it's been since we separated 4 years ago but wherever you are, I wish for nothing but a lot of happiness, joy and blessing from Allah. If we are meant to meet again, know that when the times come, I will be happy and joyful for it. God bless and thank you...

To the ED220 gang...

Thank you for everything that you have done to me, intentionally or unintentionally. All of you are wonderful people with bright minds and good heart and I believe in my heart that all of you got what it takes to make anything happen. Thank you for knowing me during the first year and supporting me in everything...from our drama productions, exams, car wash and seminar...And I'll never forget our PD and Pangkor trip and our dinner...Good luck in everything you will embark on now that know that my prayer will always be with all of you...

To the VAD62 gang...

Words cannot even describe of how much I'm grateful to all of you...I came here alone without my family and there you are, to become my family here...I remember how we work our hardest together and during those hard times, I was happy to have each and everyone of you by my side and witness everything...there are times that we disagree, there are time that we refuse to say hi and wave, there are times when handshakes were not return...but in the end, we always knew that we are always and forever be one...one family for the rest of our lives...even though there are miles separating us, families to build and works to settle but I believe our hands are still willing to stretch to keep our bonds together...note that I love all of you with all my heart and soul...forever and ever...

To Daus and Gomez...

It was hard to get to know the both of you, harder to accept the both of you in my life and now that you both gone, it's even harder for me to forget you both in my mind...I know we departed in a bad note and I've probably have felt hatred and anger to both of you but the fact remains that both of you had once made me happier than I ever felt in my life and that is one thing that I am gratitude in my life...your loses will always be a part and me and even though we can never be in the same footing ever again, I wish both of you the best because you deserve every happiness in the world...if our paths do come across again, I pray it will be on a better footing...

To Azrol...

I never thought that you become one of the friend that I've revered most in my life. Your presence meant everything for me and you have always inspired me with your advice, your passion and also your kindness not only towards me but to others that known you. I am very grateful to have your friendship here and I hope we will be friend forever in life...I will always be here for you like a sister as you always look up to me as a brother...

To Aliaa...

You're my greatest treasure when I left high school and I cannot believe that you're my greatest treasure when I left here as well...You've been there for me for almost 12 years and not once you ever complaint of getting tired or getting rid of me...If people ask whether I feel blessed in years that I've lived, I would definately said yes because Allah gave me to you and no one else...know that I love you with all my heart and soul and I am looking forward to celebrate our friendship for years to come...

My last 7 years here was a wonderful ride...each day with its lesson to learn, memories to be etched and pains to be forgotten...I am grateful for all the joys and pain and to everyone thank you for having me in this wonderful journey...

Manga review number 1: Slam Dunk

In 1997, my brother who is responsible for introducing me dozens of comics and manga brought home another comic into my attention. It struck me first because the manga that he brought was not a fantasy genre like he used to bring like Dragon Ball, Alam Pewira and others. Instead, the very one manga he brought home that day was a reality genre based. About high school basketball teams and their journey in the championship. Little did I know at the time that the manga becomes one that is so close to my heart and also it touches a lot others until it created a basketball craze among us teenagers at that time, a sport that once secluded in the eyes of the American.

Slam Dunk is a story that choronicles the life of a freshman, Sakuragi Hanaminichi, an outcast of the school because of his ferocius behavior and his flaming red hair. A lead deliquent member of his other 4 equally ferocious friends, his life takes a spin as he met the sister of the captain of the school's basketball team, Haruko that stated he as the 'savior' of the school team, a team smeared by lack of talented player and support. Initially joining the team to attract Haruko, Sakuragi finds himself to be drawn to the sport and he finally accepts the sport as his passion and embracing his new life as a self proclaimed 'basketball genius'.

The story got a lot that can attract the readers, great plot, likeable characters and laughs, a lot of laughs. It is just amazing to see that the creator, Takehiko Innoue created these 15 to 17 years old high school students to become such amazing well motivated athelete, a feat which is I personally like because the world needs these young, strong characters to be examplified and idolize. Well, he compensate their acedemic achievement most for humor purpose but still, I find that most of the characters has indefinate determination that all of us need to look up and learn from them.

Not only the story is amazing, it also shows that the creator knows his stuff. He injected a lot of basketball facts and records and it also touches a lot of techniques that are used in the game such as layout, rebound, slam dunk and others. It clarified the game and honoured the sport as well. The knowledge that Innoue had put in his work enable the reader to identify not only with the character but also with the game and the matches. It depth analysis has made Slam Dunk to score not only with the fan of the sport but the newcomers and non-fan to understand.

A little bit of lacking in this manga is only the sense of realism is a bit off sometimes. Funny to think that sometimes this young, underage characters seem to be all out in all places without parents' supervision. One of the character Mitsui, had an emotional breakdown for 2 years and no parents' involvement? Weird...The manager Ayako, spending a night at boy's house without telling the parents? (she was there to support the team, not doing any rif raf of course...) Weirder...But perhaps the absence of parents' involvement in most of the characters are done in order for us to see the characters to develop their own expectations rather than to comply to
their parents' expectations.

All in all, Slam Dunk is a good read, it inspires and uses sports as a medium not only to entertain but to be honoured and revered as a good barometer of teenagers' sheer strength and diligence.

Movie review number one: Twilight saga: New Moon.

I was never a fan of the Twilight series. I've read it a bit for my literature class and honestly, I'm not that hooked like some of my friends or as much as I've hooked by Harry Potter series. But watching New Moon seems to be an obligation for me because it has created such a phenomenon worldwide. Aspired to become a movie critique, I made the decision to join it. Well, if you can't win them, join them..

Running for almost 3 hours, New Moon is the second adaptation of Stephanie Mayer's Twilight saga. It started with Bella having a dream on her birthday that she looks old while the 109 years old Edward still look glitter, shimmer and young. Thus we enter the world of Bella and here is her number one conflict, the age-look factor. Then we enter her conflict number two,
Edward leaves her because he claimed that she was not good enough for him. Caution, entering the second realm of Bella, you need either an electric watch or a patience friend to be able to wake you up because, here is where all the actions goes in the movie...never ending hours of Bella moping, gazing and reminiscing of how tragic and sad her life is. We will see her breath Edward, eat Edward, sleep Edward and Edward, Edward, Edward...forever.

But wait! Seeing this is a love story, there will be a character that cannot be absent in any story. The knight in shining armor. In the movie, the position was taken by Jacob Black, the Native American who longed for Bella. Then he does what other knights are expected to do. Always saves the girl at the most critical moment, gushing promises of 'I would never hurt you like he does' and trying to find every spare moment to steal a kiss from a girl. What difference does New Moon can offer than other teenage soapy love story? The combination of the teeth of vampire (which almost absent in this movie) and fluffy warewolf prancing around in forest, looking for vampire to slay.

Not only the storyline are too long, weaving and poorly developed...the script is also laughable that it almost gagged me in the thought of thinking of how the actors can deliver the lines. Here are some example: Imagine school ground: two teenagers talking and suddenly the guy said 'You're the only reason for me to able to breathe in the world'. OK, seriously this line is only permitted to be said by a mere hit puberty teenager under any of these circumstances: a) if the background or the scene is some World War and the boy was leaving for war. b) if either the boy or the girl was heavilly in alcohol or drug influence that by the next 5 minutes either of them had forgotten about it. The dialougue was corny, moapy and unreal and it almost can be seen as an insult for teenage romance. Not to mention, the line got its way to direct the psychology of the audience. Exhibit A: Bella said to Jacob, 'How come you're so buff, you're only 16'. Here, the line got a hint for us. For the rest of Jacob screentime in the movie, you're eyes should be fixed on the buff, because that's all he shows. Suddenly, he is seen throughout the movie, shirtless, jumping up and down and flexing his abs between the trees and woods. Is it good abs to be looked upon? Hell yeah! But is it enough to compensate for the other losses in the movie? Hell no...

All in all, New Moon is a tragic movie in a sense that it was lost, too long and unreal for the viewers to get connected. And the protagonist Bella is not a strong character that has a real issue like Harry, Alice or Dorothy. And it makes the viewers hard to connect to her partly due to her never ending mood swings and bad choices of action. I can understand if a fan of the series can appriciate it because it was quite faithful to be book and it complete the expectation, but for a non-fan like me, I'm not yet swayed into the direction. All in all, what I can say is I can understand why New Moon can become a phenomenon because it contains a lot of escapism that teenagers like, forbidden love, fantasy to be swept away and the third party guys but to put it into great works like Willy Wonka, Harry Potter or Lord of the Rings is a bit strech and undeserved.

Overall score:

Story: 1.5 / 5
Acting: 2/ 5
Cinematography: 3/ 5

Introduction.

Finally after I've finished my exams and currently unemployed, I finally able to start my project. To have my own review blog. I am not as good as Roger Egbert (my idol) or any other critiques from IGN, rottentomatoes or others but at least this will be a good exercise till I get my own column for movie review. (my dream...)

I'm an avid movie fan. Being an educator, I regard movie as a good source of knowledge especially in moralistic and humanistic way. I strongly believe that we can learn from virtually any movie that we watched, even the bad ones. Here is where I put my thoughts and my insights. Some may agree, some may not but that's life, we can't pleased everybody.

I'm also a fan of manga and books so sometimes I will make a review of them too. Enjoy!!!
